Traditional names popular

NZPA-AAP London James and Elizabeth were the most popular names for British babies in 1986, according to an annual survey of births announced in “The Times” newspaper. though Charlotte was the most popular first name for girls. Sarah, the chart-topper in 1984 and third in 1985, dropped out of the top 10 first names for girls, in spite of national enthusiasm for Prince Andrew’s July wedding to Sarah Ferguson.

also dropped out of the top 10. They were replaced by Lucy and Emma. The most popular names (all forenames included) were: James, Elizabeth, 1; Edward, Louise, 2; William, Charlotte, 3; Alexander, Jane, 4; Thomas, Alice, 5; John, Mary, 6; Charles, Lucy, 7; David, Sarah, 8; Richard, Emma, 9; Michael, Emily, 10.
