Telecom details
The name and logo for the new Telecom corporation, one of the Stateowned enterprise offshoots of the Post Office, have been announced by the chairman of the Telecom Establishment Board, Mr Roy Mason.
The registered name of the organisation will be the Telecom Corporation of New Zealand, Ltd, although the commonly used “brand” name will be simply Telecom. The logo is the word Telecom in black with the letter O crossed by three upwardshooting lines in blue, green, and yellow.
The symbol of the new corporation will be the letter O with its intersecting lines. The lines through the O represent the three channels of communication:
copper wire, fibre optics, and microwave radio.
Although Telecom will not officially come into existence until April 1, the new logo would be progressively introduced. The logo was designed by Colin Simon, an independent Wellington designer, in conjunction with Rodger Harrison and lan Adams, of Carlton-Car-ruthers du Chateau, Ltd.
Three executive appointments for Telecom have been announced. Mr Gordon McPherson has been appointed general manager of district operations for the new corporation. Mr McPherson takes up the position after a four-year term as Engiheer in Chief, Post Office Headquarters, and a long and comprehensive career with the Post Office. His career began in Dunedin in 1947 when he joined as a junior
mechanician. Mr Lance McKechie has been appointed deputy general. manager of district operations. He has been with the Post Office since 1955, when he joined as a technical assistant in Dunedin. He is a former regional engineer, Christchurch. Mr Rob Wilkinson has been appointed general manager of technology. Mr Wilkinson joined the Post Office as a technical assistant in 1958.
