‘Das Boot’

Sir,—-Ken Strongman’s “Putting in Das Boot” was, as always, superbly amusing. His criticism was unnecessarily harsh. The dubbing was poor and made worse by Americanese, but Bavarian television did not repeat what has been done by American and British film-makers. The latter made their submarines appear the size of Paddington station with exciting happenings every five seconds. “Das Boot” was different, with its presentation of mind-shattering boredom and claustrophobia. Perhaps Professor Strongman should have got himself in the right mood by watching all the episodes while sitting in a closet. After complaining about cliches he also complains about the plethora of “piercing blue eyes” (a cliche in itself!). Germans tend to have blue eyes, although they could have thrown in a few men with non-piercing brown eyes. This mini-series was a bit laboured, but he could have checked with sub-mariners about life aboard a submarine in wartime before trashing “Das Boot.” — Yours, etc.,
