56 breath tests; four accidents
Traffic officers on routine patrols in Christchurch tested as many motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol at the week-end as did officers on checkpoints. A total of 56 motorists were given breath-screen-ing tests from Friday evening to last evening, said Traffic Officer Jeff Kay, of the Ministry of Transport in Christchurch. The number of accidents on Christchurch roads at the week-end was well down on the usual figure.
From Friday evening to last evening, only four accidents, one of which involved injury, had been reported to the Ministry. “That indicates a very quiet week-end,” said Traffic Officer Kay. Two checkpoints were again working in Christchurch last evening. More than 1360 motorists were stopped by the Ministry’s two checkpoints on Saturday, night. The checkpoints were set up in Madras Street and Harper Avenue.
