Rethink urged on funding
PA Wellington
The Government must reconsider its plan to phase out funding for the farm cadet scheme, or face big rundown in farm training, Federated Farmers says. The president, Mr Peter Elworthy, said that unless the Government changed its mind several schemes would end, while others would significantly cut the numbers being trained.
“Not only would this have a severe long-term effect on the farm industry, it would ultimately penalise the entire country,” he said. Mr Elworthy accused the Government of going to extreme lengths with its “user-pays” principle, by imposing the increased financial burden of training on the already hardpressed agricultural industry.
