Visit to Ice cancelled
The Austrian mountaineers and scientists, who have had to cancel their plans to visit Antarctica, on board the ship Aurora which was to have been their transport to the ice. They are, from left: Dr Fitz Seewald, Wolfgang Petz, Leopold Krenn, Bruno Klausbruckner, and Freidl Pummer. The men have been waiting for six weeks in Christchurch for the Aurora which arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday. The Aurora is the support vessel for the Norwegian SO Degrees South expedition. The ship's master, Captain Belnt Steinsland, said yesterday that Antarctic ice conditions had caused the delay. Apart from being behind schedule, the ship’s two month visit to the
Ice had gone smoothly, he said. The Aurora will stay in Lyttelton for a week to take on supplies before returning to Antarctica. They will pick up members of the Norwegian expedition and take them to South America. The ship will then return to the Ross Ice Shelf to pick up four members of the expedition who are walking to the South Pole. The expedition’s leader, Dr Monica Kristensen, is among the party on the polar walk. The Aurora is expected to return to Lyttelton In mid-March.
