Armed offenders squads called out
PA New Plymouth A Taumarunui man, Kenneth Mahu, aged 32, appeared at a special sitting of the District Court at Taumarunui on Friday and was remanded on charges of intent to intimidate, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, and possession of an offensive weapon — a metal bar. A Justice of the Peace, Mr Les Byars, remanded Mahu without plea to January 27 on bail. Conditions of bail were that he stay away from Taumarunui and members of his family and that he
abstain from drinking alcohol. His appearance followed' a call-out of armed offenders squads from Palmerston North and Wanganui at 3 a.m. on Friday after local police and traffic officers cordoned a residence in Ngatai Street. Family members were taken from the house and neighbours were also moved. Mahu gave himself up to the police, Senior-Ser-geant Mike Keaney told the Court. The police seized a .308-calibre rifle, ammunition and a chrome bar.
