Central beats Wellington

PA New Plymouth Central Districts salvaged some pride from a disappointing Shell Cup cricket programme with a win over Wellington at Pukekura Park yesterday. However, the gloss was taken off the performance by the way Wellington lost the game chasing a run rate of seven per over in ■ a bid to head off Auckland and win the Shell Cup. A dismal Central total of 193, which was only made respectable thanks to a hard-hit unbeaten 32 by Gary Robertson, would have been an easy target in 50 overs, but in 27 overs the going was always going to be tough for Wellington. Whereas Wellington’s batting had been bright and attractive, even though wickets were falling, Central was, apart from a couple of patches, dull. The openers, John Smith and Tony Blain, both found run-scoring hard and Smith did not have a happy time. He lasted 13 overs before going to a superb slips catch to Coney with his total on four. Blain was run out for 17 in the sixteenth over after
