Miss Irene Tolerton
Miss Irene Tolerton, who was awarded the 0.8. E. for services to nursing after spending most of her working life in Christchurch, died recently. She was born in Christchurch in 1907 and educated at Christchurch Girls’ High School. Miss Tolerton started her nursing training at Christ-
church Hospital in 1932 and did her maternity training at Timaru before returning to Christchurch to do a midwife’s course at Saint Helens Hospital. After completing postgraduate studies in Wellington she returned to Christchurch Hospital as a senior tutor in 1949 before becoming the first assistant matron.
In 1956 she became matron of Burwood Hospital before being appointed matron-in-chief for the Wellington Hospital Board the following year. Miss Tolerton took a particular interest in .training new entrants to nursing and in teaching. She retired in 1964.
