Kenny chooses to stay

PA Dunedin Dean Kenny, the Otago rugby half-back and 1986 All Black, will remain in Dunedin and play for Otago again next year, it was announced by the Otago Rugby Union’s chairman, John Dowling. Mr Dowling described the decision as “great news for Otago rugby.”

"Dean has been under a lot of pressure both before and after the All Black tour of France to move north,” Mr Dowling said. “It is pleasing the speculation can now end and he can settle down and enjoy his rugby without these external pressures.” Kenny, who will turn out

for the Southern club again next year, said he was keen to play to the highest level possible. His goal is to retain-his place in the All Black squad and take part in the inaugural World Cup competition in Australia and New Zealand next winter.-

Kenny has played 69 matches for Otago since making his debut for the province against Bay of Plenty at Whakatane in 1981.

Kenny has returned to his family’s home in Palmerston North for the Christmas break. He is expected back in Dunedin next week.

His sister, Tracey, will marry the North Harbour and All Black first five-eighths, Frano Botica, on Friday.
