Trident favoured for N.Z. Messenger

Special correspondent Auckland It would come as a major surprise if Trident was beaten in tonight’s SIOO,OOO New Zealand Messenger Championship at Alexandra Park.

Notwithstanding the strength of the field in tonight’s TNT-sponsored event, Trident has been in such fine form this season that his rivals will be hard-pressed to match him. His Edendale trainer, Brian O’Meara, expressed some concern that Trident was feeling the effects of the humid Auckland climate but those fears were dispelled almost completely after the horse’s tradesman-like success at Alexandra Park last Saturday. A compact entire by Out to Win from Witchlight, Trident was having his first start after a luckless Australian campaign earlier this month in which he finished fourth to Master Mood, My Lightning Blue and Village Kid in the sAustl7o,ooo JPS Miracle Mile in Sydney. O’Meara said that he thought Trident may have finished a lot closer to Master Mood had luck gone his way during the running. Trident’s form before the Miracle Mile had been most impressive. He had won impressively at the New Zealand Cup meeting and had scored over a mile, also at Addington, in a brilliant 1:56.8. Although he has not grown very much in height since his two-year-old days, Trident has filled out and matured exceptionally well. Trident’s handy No. 2 barrier draw will also

make life tough for which many expect to be his toughest opponent, Laser Lad. Laser Lad did not fare too well in the draw and will carry the No. 17 saddlecloth, but with the scratching of the balloted out horses he will start from No. 4 on the second line, in behind the Kumeu speedster, That Fella. Peter Jones, who trains Laser Lad as well as another leading chance, Imperial Time, said last Saturday that both horses

had thrived since arriving in Auckland. “As a matter of fact,” said Jones, “I think they may have done too well. “I think now that maybe I should have started Laser Lad and Imperial Time tonight (Saturday) rather than keep them fresh for the big one.” The fine southern mares, Free’s Best and Michele Bromac, will carry solid support, too, following good efforts last Saturday.

Free’s Best showed great courage to beat Sycamore and Dreaming Neebray after being wide for the last 1200 metres, while Michele Bromac was late getting clear' when second to Star of Shanghai, which passed his 2700 metres from a mobile .start in a swift 3:24.5. The leading northern chances appear to be Clarius, That Fella, Waimauku Princess and Kiwi River, but none really look likely to trouble Trident.
