Maguire gives Australian rebels hope
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg An inspired spell of seam bowling by John Maguire gave the rebel Australian cricketers a slim chance of victory on the third day of their fiveday match against South Africa yesterday. Maguire took six for 61 in an unchanged spell of 29 overs to help dismiss
the Springboks for 182 in their second innings. The Australians now need 295 for victory, a daunting task after their unimpressive first innings 142 in reply to South Africa’s 254. Bad light stopped play before the start of the Australians’ second innings. Maguire began his marathon spell before
lunch when the Springboks appeared to be heading for an unbeatable lead 1 to capitalise on their 112run first innings advantage. Maguire, a fitness addict who runs at least 10km a day, changed all that with his remarkable stint. After Rod McCurdy had the opener, Jimmy Cook, T caught behind for one, Maguire took charge taking the next six wickets. Among Maguire's victims were Kevin McKenzie, who top scored for the home side with 40, the captain, Clive Rice, who made 18, and Brian McMillan, who scored 30. j Carl Rackemgnn then j stepped in, cleaning up
the tail to finish with three for 54. The wicketkeeper, Steve Rixon, took six catches to give him 10 victims in the match. The Australians began the day on 125 for seven and managed only a further 17 runs while losing their last three wickets, including that of Michael Haysman, who took 126 minutes to score 25. ! The veteran lefthander, Graeme Pollock, who first played for South Africa 22 years ago, has been included in the Springbok squad for the second match starting in Cape Town on New Year’s Day. Pollock has been added to the 11 playing in this game.
