Comfortable victory to Central Districts

Central Districts comfortably accounted for Northern Districts in their Shell Cup cricket match at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday.

Central scored 203 runs before dismissing Northern for 151. The substance to Central’s innings was provided by Stuart Duff and Scott Briasco, who both scored half-centuries after the first three wickets had fallen • for 44 runs.

After lan Smith was fourth out at 71, Duff and Briasco shared an 82-run partnership on their home wicket. Briasco injured a groin muscle when on 39 and later had Tony Blain running for him, .while Duff faced only 65 balls in reaching 60.

A slow outfield and the pitch’s variable bounce restricted Central to seven boundaries, four of them struck from no-balls. Duff hit three fours.

The Glamorgan professional, John Derrick, and

the left-armer, Murray Child, were the best of the Northern bowlers. Brian Barrett had a useful debut, though he conceded two wides and four noballs in his eight overs.

But the Northern batting was disappointing. Only Bryan Young, Chris Kuggeleijn and Barry Cooper looked promising, without going on to sizeable totals.

Wayne Martin, the Central medium-pacer, returned excellent figures, Gary Robertson impressed with the new ball, and Duff rounded off his “man of the match” award-winning performance with six economical overs..
