Defence Ministry to alter structure
PA Wellington The Defence Ministry will scrap its policy branch early next year as part of a re-organisation of its top-level command and administration structure, the “Dominion” reports. The branch, responsible for developing national defence policy and developing and co-ordinating resources policy for the three services, will effectively be split in two. An assistant chief of defence staff (strategic planning) will head a new development plans branch, responsible for strategic planning and force development policies. The branch will also coordinate international policy considerations with military planning. A civilian assistant secretary of defence will head a new programmes and Ministerial branch to monitor defence performance against objectives and budget, and draft Ministerial submissions and other defence policy papers.
A Ministry spokesman said the changes were being made to streamline the Ministry to fit the Government’s efficiency plans for departments, and to recognise the increasing need for national joint command decisions.
