Boy, 4, killed while crossing Pages Rd
A boy, aged four, was killed and his sister seriously injured when they were hit by a car while crossing Pages Road, Christchurch, yesterday afternoon. The boy was Stephen Tipene <Boy Boy) ManiheraWilliams, of Christchurch. His sister, Aria, also aged four, was admitted to Christchurch Hospital’s intensive-care unit where she was reported to be in a serious condition last evening. A police spokesman said it appeared that the children ran from between parked cars into the path of an oncoming car outside Nga Hau E Wha marae about 2 p.m. At the week-end a man, aged 26, died after being struck by a car in Buchanans Road, Hei Hei, about 1 a.m. on Saturday morning. Christchurch roads, according to Senior Traffic Sergeant lan Freeman of the Ministry of Transport. Only two accidents were reported on Saturday night which were well down on the usual number, he said. “It’s quite incredible really — it’s like driving on different roads out there,” he said. Checkpoints set up in Christchurch stopped more than 2000 vehicles at the week-end. Of those stopped on Friday and Saturday nights 37 were given breath screening tests, 20 evidential blood tests, and five blood samples. An Auckland man was killed near Dargaville on Saturday when the car he was driving cartwheeled and collided with two tour buses. man, aged 57. None of the 26 passengers in the first bus were injured. The second bus was on its way to collect passengers. Its driver was also unhurt. A man died after he was hit by a car in Willowbank Road, Napier, at 11 p.m. on Saturday. He was William Rex Parata, aged 35, of Napier. A girl was killed when hit by a car in Auckland on Friday afternoon. She was Maureen Fuifui Meatoga, aged three, of Papakura. Since Christmas Eve, three motor-cyclists have been killed in accidents in Christchurch, Hamilton and Auckland. A Taradale woman died in a head-on collision with a car in Riccarton on Christmas Day. The official holiday toll period began at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will end at 8 a.m. on January 5. Last year 25 people were killed and injured in that period
