Aegean Princess wins for durable partnership

J. J. BOYLE

An owner-trainer partnership established some 25 years ago was successfully represented by Aegean Princess in the Timaru Racing Club’s Park Hill Breeders’ Handicap on Saturday. Aegean Princess is owned by Mr Jack Thwaites, a former president of the Hororata Racing Club, arid trained at Riccarton by Peter Jones. In the early 1960 s the Thwaites-Jones combination had some rewarding days with St Malo and Bridie O’Cally, and now Aegean Princess is making contributions to the

family record. St Malo won the 1963 Dunedin Guineas and a double at Trentham. Bridie O’Cally won three races in her first season. Aegean Princess (by Harbor Prince) has now won five races from 33 starts in the Thwaites colours, and Paul Richards, who partnered her in her easy win over 2100 m on Saturday enthused over her prospects for a holiday race like the Waikouaiti Cup. However Aegean Princess’s connections prefer a wider spacing between races, and will now prepare their consistent per-

former for the Kumara Nuggets. "One race on the West Coast, then the 1800 m race for fillies and mares at Riccarton in February,” Jones said yesterday. Aegean Princess was third favourite for Saturday’s race, and she shut out the other with ease. Serene Pulse, the win favourite, was a battling third almost four lengths behind. Royal Adder, the 2/1 fancy, was failing to respond under heavy pressure all of 800 m out, and was last but one in the field of seven.
