Huge Motukarara crowd

The highly popular country and western meeting run by the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club at Motukarara on Saturday attracted its usual huge crowd. The course was crowded early in the day and well before the first race was run, with latecomers having to park on surrounding roadsides. Officials varied in opinions on

whether the crowd was the largest ever, but it was certainly one of the best. The official “guestimate” was “something over 15,000 adults and about 8000 children.” The club had its problems early in the day when it was discovered that the cable running to the totalisator in the public car park had been damaged. The fault was rectified in time for restricted betting on the opening and

there were no serious breakdowns later.

The holiday crowd bet $520,418 on the meeting at Motukarara, well ahead of the previous record of $470,774 handled 12 months earlier.

In addition, more than $41,000 was bet on other meetings run on Saturday, while betting on the Banks Peninsula meeting from outside amounted to $48,908.
