Westport winners continue chase for West Coast bonus at Reefton today

Special correspondent Greymouth The generosity of Canterbury trotting enthusiasts, Peter Cocks and Arthur Idiens, in sponsoring the 1986 West Coast $lO,OOO Pacing Bonus looks likely to be capitalised upon by one of several very talented pacers which won their way out of maiden ranks at Westport on Friday and Saturday. The 10 Westport winner? are divided between the two Cl races at the Trotting Club’s meeting at Reefton today and if any of them win those events they will move through to the Cocks and Idiens Handicap Pace at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting next Saturday evening. This season the bonus contenders have a strong Canterbury content but there are two local holding definite prospects as well. Keith Powell’s representative Gold Mine downed the highly-regarded Technicality on Friday and races against her again today. The Reefton-owned and trained Murmac won in the good time of 3:32 for the 2600 m on the grass track after being run down close to the line on the first day at Westport. Murmac is a strong-looking Gentle George horse which has impressed Coasters with some useful trial performances. He has the advantage of racing today on his home track. Con Brio and Five Kilo’s were very impressive winners on the first day and rival the second day graduates Trebla and Technicality in the Reefton Businessman’s Pace. It is difficult to see the bonus contenders being beaten by any others in the field, at best they are a seasoned lot.
