WATER DIVINER?
The discerning reader may have noticed recently a large number of drowned worms on footpaths, perhaps a few newly formed rivers where gutters used to be, and maybe even the odd hole in the gumboot. To those readers it will come as no surprise that we had a wet winter.
With this in mind the Kaiapoi Bowling Club’s application for permission to sink a well of 191 metres, in order to extract 90 cubic metres of water on one day every 14 was viewed with a little incredulity by one Christchurch resident.
Now Kaiapoi is north of Christchurch and might reasonably be expected to receive slightly different weather patterns. Generally, though, what Kaiapoi receives first is what Christchurch is deluged with

moments later and those southerly showers Christchurch shivers under usually meander on to Kaiapoi later. A search for water in Kaiapoi would seem an unnecessary exercise. Having just lifted a wet carpet in an office at the bottom of her garden for the second time this winter, this Christchurch resident decided that there must be something uneven in water distribution in Canterbury. Here she was thinking up ways of digging drainage to rid herself of water and there was the Kaiapoi Bowling Club digging holes to find it. The solution is obvious. If any Kaiapoi Bowling Club members have spare buckets she has generously offered -to share her excess cubic metres. In return she would appreciate a hand humping a couple of sodden carpets.
