Chch heart man dies

Mr Roy Richards, the man who had two heart transplants, died of a lung infection in St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney early on Christmas morning. Mr Richards, who was 54, had been in the hospital’s critical-care unit since exploratory lung surgery on December 16. He had been on a respirator since then. 1

Mrs Trish Burns, the hospital’s public relations officer, said Mr Richards had died at 4 a.m. on December 25.

Two of his children, Brian and Carol, had arrived in Sydney the evening before, she said. “There was no rejection of the heart — he had a major lung infection, which is what he died from,” said Mrs Burns..

Mr Richards had two heart transplants in two days last month. His body rejected the first transplanted heart. r

He was the first Christchurch person to have a heart transplant.
