These two Bromley girls had New Brighton beach all to themselves yesterday afternoon.

When “The Press” visited the beach at 3.30 p.m. the only persons on the sand or in the water were Angela Davies (left) and Vanessa Ross. The girls, both aged 15, said they had felt like doing something a little weird on Boxing Day, and so they braved an overcast sky and biting wind at New Brighton beach. The deserted beaches were good news for surf lifeguards, who reported a very quiet day, with no incidents.

For dairies selling icecreams and cold drinks, however, Boxing Day was a disappointment. Most shop owners said they had few customers, although one tearoom at Sumner said that trade had been steady.

“There have been a few sightseers and people out for a drive or stroll but nothing like the mad rush we would have had on a sunny day,” the owner said.
