HWT bid only highlight

NZPA Sydney Robert Holmes a Court's counter-bid for The Herald and Weekly Times was the only bright spot on Australian share markets on Wednesday. Brokers said it partially offset selling pressure across the boards before the exchanges closed for the Christmas Holiday break. At the close of the halfday’s trading the all ordinaries index had slipped 1.7 points to 1462.4. The Bell Group jumped 16c to a day’s high of 900, J. N. Taylor was a steady 730 and News Corp finished unchanged at 1690 after reaching 1705. The Herald associate, Queensland Press, rose 10c to 1660 and Advertiser Newspapers was steady at 460.
