Obituary Sister Mary Healy

One of the oldest nuns of the Sisters of Mercy congregation in Christchurch died on Tuesday. She was Sister Mary Healy, of St Mary’s convent in Colombo Street. She was 94.

■ Sister Mary, the youngest of a family of -seven children, was born in Wellington, and first entered the Christchurch convent at the beginning of World War I. She had

lived in Christchurch for 72 years, with a short stay in a convent at Darfield. The sisters at St Mary’s said Sister Mary was not a public figure but was well loved by those who knew her.

“She led a quiet, dedicated life, but had a great sense of humour,” said one sister. A funeral requiem was held at the convent yesterday afternoon.
