Rescue commendation
PA Nelson A University of Canterbury student has received a Fire Service commendation for his rescue of two young boys from a Nelson house fire. Stephen Ching climbed a six metre pipe on to the balcony of the blazing house on August 28, broke a bedroom window and snatched Robert and Michael Pollock, aged .
five and three respectively, seconds before the house was engulfed in flames. Mr Ching’s bravery was recognised on Tuesday during a ceremony at the Nelson Fire Station. He received a letter of commendation from Nelson’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr Ted Stewart. Mr Ching’s rescue involved courage and determination, Mr Stewart said.
“The Fire Service doesn’t always have the opportunity of expressing its appreciation — I suppose because we take these situations for granted. But seeing a member of the public react in this way deserves congratulations,” he said. Mr Ching said after the ceremony, “The best award I could get is seeing the two kids sitting here today.”
