Hutt eyes hat-trick
PA Hamilton Hutt Valley starts its bid for a hat-trick of national men’s softball titles in Hamilton on Monday. Hutt must again start favourite after winning the championship for the last two seasons and 18 times altogether. But the new two-life tournament format gives all 15 participating teams an equal starting chance and once again Hutt Valley will have the tradi-
tional stiff competition from Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury. The new system has all 15 teams — a drop of five on last year’s tournament — seeded into the first round of the Beatty Cup with the top seed Hutt Valley, getting the bye.
The first-round winner will continue in the draw and losers will drop to a losers’ bracket where a second loss before Wednesday relegates
teams to the Headifen Memorial Trophy for a nine-team round robin.
The Beatty Cup will be finalised at 12.30 p.m. on Thursday or immediately afterwards if two finals are required. The top six teams are then seeded into a second two-life competition for the Rothmans Cup and national title, the first final of that due to be played tomorrow week at 2.15 prni.
