High rate of cancer in Naenae

PA Wellington Extraordinary numbers of people living in Naenae are dying of lung cancer and the Wellington division of Action on Smoking and Health (A.S.H.) is calling for an urgent investigation. The Chairman, Mr Terry McCarthy, said A.S.H. was worried about Health Department figures which showed that in the five years to 1984, 47 people died of lung cancer in the Naenae census area.

“This is more than twice as many lung cancer deaths as any other census area in the Wellington region. We don’t know the reason, but the figures are very disturbing.”

Mr McCarthy compared Naenae with the WiltonOtari census area. Based on 1981 figures, Naenae had a population of about 9500 and had had 47 lung cancer deaths. WiltonOtari had a population of about 4200 and had had only three lung cancer deaths.
