Award for mining book

A Reefton man has gained the J. M. Sherrard Award for his book on quartz mining at Reefton, Waiuta and the Lyell. Darrell Latham’s book, “The Golden Reefs,” was published by Pegasus Press, Christchurch, in 1984. The awards commemorate the work of the late John (Jock) Sherrard, the author of “Kaikoura, A History of the District,”

published in 1966. The awards, judged every two years, are offered to encourage studies in New Zealand regional history.
