Top fleet for Akaroa race
A close race is expected when the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club’s keeler fleet competes in the annual 40 mile Marine International, Akaroa yacht race on Boxing Day. With all the top yachts from division one and two entered in the blue water event, close interest will be shown in Archon (A. and W. Archer). She returned to the water last weekend, after hitting a reef in a Dorlon twilight series race.
Archon, skippered by Bruce Lang, will be keen to make amends for his misfortunes, and will be seeking line honours. Two yachts which will be pushing them hard for line honours will be the young 10m design Rock-a-bye (S. Rose, N. Cross), and the Davidson 38, Southern Fun.
Rock-a-bye skippered by Gavin Cooke has improved since he took over the helm and has been turning in some notable performances in the light airs. Southern Fun is the in form yacht of the first division, and has clinched a large number of line honours this season.
Skippered by lan Franklin, the yacht was fitted with new rigging and sails at the start of the season, and will be keen to improve on their last performance in the Lyttelton to Akaroa
event. Another two yachts that cannot be discounted are Granny Apple jointly skippered by Brian Wall and Malcolm Field, and the Farr designed Natural Magic. Granny Apple has been starting strongly this season, but has been fading in the latter part of the events. Natural Magic has improved as the season has progressed, and with Ivan Atkinson at the helm, has been pushing Southern Fun in the quest for line honours in recent races. One yacht which will be attempting to turn in a fine performance is the eight-month-old KauriAnn, skippered by Kevin Reed. In the second division, Keith Mobbs at the helm of his Allan Gurney designed half tonner, Janna, will be out to retain line honours, but should receive stiff resistance from Vamoos (John Dyksma), and the in form Athenea, skippered by Russell Forward. Keen rivalry has developed between Vamoos and Athenea throughout the season and the pair of yachts will be watching each other closely. Another division two boat which cannot be discounted is the Ron Guthrey owned Rainbird, and if they find the conditions to their liking could be hard to beat.
