Harrods opens early for two Princes

By

ROBIN CHARTERIS

in London Harrods, one of the few top people’s stores with a Royal Appointment, opened its toy department early this week — by Royal appointment.

A side door of the fashionable Knightsbridge department store was opened 30 minutes early so that Prince William and Prince Harry, sons of the Prince and Princess of Wales, could meet Father Christmas.

Prince William, aged four, second in line to the throne, led his- two-year-old brother and their mother straight into Santa’s grotto.

One Prince sat on each of Santa’s knees to tell him what they wanted for

Christmas. Then the youngsters were given the run of the huge toy department for 20 minutes, all without a customer in sight.

It was their first visit to meet Santa. Last year, Princess Diana sent an aide to the store with a Christmas shopping list. Prince Harry, who received cuddly toys and wooden puzzles then, was reportedly much more interested in models of spacemen, spaceships, tractors, boats and trains this year. As for Prince William, who once would not be seen without his 1985 Postman Pat vacuum flask, moved on to cars which turn into fearsome robots.
