Work begins on Rotunda
Contractors have begun work on the basement of the Edmonds Band Rotunda to install a kitchen and toilets in readiness for its opening as a restaurant in February. Other steps to the rotunda’s conversion include glazing the upper floor with opening windows. The restaurant is being developed by Tourplan Pacific, a Christchurch company, which will run punts on the Avon River.
Mrs Barbara Taylor, of Tourplan Pacific, said the company hoped to open the restaurant at the beginning of February.
Approval for the draft lease of the rotunda was given by the Christchurch City Council this week and permission has also be given on behalf of the Minister of Lands, whose approval is needed because the riverbank is reserve land. The full pro-
cedure seeking permission will take some months. An English puntmaker, Mr Adrian Gayner, has been brought to Christchurch by Tourplan to build punts. He is hard at work on the boats.
