Irving’s catch ends match

Bruce Irving might have been carried out to a bat on a stretcher but the sprightly cricket veteran was later to show that he was anything but a crock case in the festival 40over match at Lancaster Park Oval yesterday.

The match was in honour of Irving; the wily Lancaster Park offspinner who recently declared his first grade club career closed after a long innings which dated back to 1955.

Teams consisting of Irving’s fellow Lancaster Park players and old rivals took part in the fun day run feast which produced over 550 runs in about 270 minutes. They were teams rich in talent; 17 of the participants had

played for Canterbury, six had represented New Zealand.

Fittingly Irving’s team finished ■ the winner and appropriately it was Irving’s . smart catch which ended the innings of the opposing team. Irving, aged 54, was also responsible for the first dismissal with another sharp catch. A good sprinkling of spectators watched the batsmen give the bowlers a savage mauling. Scores: Bruce Irving’s XI 293/9 (A. E. Collins 36, D. A. Dempsey 81, R. M. Gearry 36, A. G. Duckmanton 37, W. R. Wilson, 34; B. F. Hastings 2/ 15) beat Brian Salt’s XI 261 (I. R. Hartland 35, C. L. Bull 48, B. G. Hadlee 38, Hastings 61; B. C. Irving 3/45).
