Polo teams to visit

PA Palmerston North Polo teams from Zimbabwe and Australia will tour New Zealand next year. The Zimbabwe team will arrive on January 17 and tour the lower North Island as part of a reciprocal arrangement with the Central Districts Polo Association. A Central Districts team toured Zimbabwe in 1984.

Zimbabwe is an 18-goal side. Tom Brown (five goals) has been to New Zealand with Zimbabwe Colts, and Johnny Campbell (five), played for the Amuri club in North Canterbury two years ago. The others are Yannish Negri (four) and Douglas Stanley (four). Brown and Campbell were members of the colts team which toured New Zealand three years ago and beat the South Island. The Australian tour will be a drawcard, especially the test at Auckland which is expected to be televised. New Zealand convincingly won the last test in Sydney in 1981.

The New Zealand team may rate as high as 28 goals with three professional players, Morrinsville’s Tony Devcich (seven) and Graeme Thomas (six) and Auckland’s Cody Forysth (six). The New Zealand team

will also play a test against Australia at the Sydney Easter Show next year.

The Australians will bring five players under the captain, Jim MacGinely (New South Wales). He is one of the six-goal players. The others are the Queensland brothers, Jim and Stuart Gilmore. New South Wales’ Jamie Mac Kay (seven) and Queensland’s promising John Tait (five) make up the complement. New Zealand’s aim is to get into a position to play the international polo masters from Argentina, most of whom are 10-goal players. However, New Zealand’s best player, Stuart MacKenzie (eight goals), will be playing in Florida during the Australian tour. Itineraries: Zimbabwe: January 21 v. Rangitikei, Bulls; 25 v. Wanstead, Wanstead; from January 26, to South Island. Australia: February 7 v. Wanstead/Hawke’s Bay Combined, Bulls; Feb 8 v. Rangitikei, Bulls; Feb 11 v. Kihikihi, Kihikihi; Feb 12 v. Cambridge, Cambridge; Feb 14 v. Morrinsville, Morrinsville; Feb 15 v. Northern Polo Association (Cambridge, Kihikihi, Taupiri, Auckland, Morrinsville, Waimai), Morrinsville; Feb 17 v.
