Grocery opposition to Extax proposal
The Grocery Manufacturers’ Association has rejected the National Party’s Extax Proposal. The .Association’s Executive Director, Mr Peter Tritt, said grocery manufacturers were concerned about the exemption of “basic foods” and the loss of revenue that is inevitable. He said that exempting “basic foods” was fraught with difficulties. There would be many problems in defining which goods were exempt.
“Whatever definition is finally arrived at it is inevitable that the exemptions would distort the marketplace and penalise employment-creating value-added products.
