Electoral reform lobby pleased

PA Auckland An electoral reform lobby has welcomed proposals to introduce proportional representation in New Zealand. The group said that the electoral system recommended by a Royal Commission: was fair, simple, and kept some advantages of the “first past the post” set-up while eliminating distortions. The Electoral Reform Coalition, said that the report of the Royal Commission on the Electoral System included many of the points raised by its submission.

The Wellington convener of the group, Mr Phil Saxby, said the coalition would try and build support for the commission’s report.

The coalition was nonpartisan and had support from political party supporters and non-party people, he said.
