Booth c Francis b inch a first-class batsman as he moved into his shots, stroking 11 stunning boundaries. His on-side strokes in particular stamped him as something out of the ordinary. Hartshorn was out in the third-to-last over, with 25 still needed, and the later batsmen were not quite able to see it through, in spite of Dave Dempsey's deliberate bowling of three no-balls in the last over when 20 were required. If events in the afternoon moved apace, with several batsmen prospering, the morning play was also a delight to watch as Steve McCormick and Danny Halligan had Riccarton cruising through to first-innings points with an unbeaten partnership of 137 in* 148 minutes.

Halligan’s 86 came from 145 balls, and the youngster hardly put a foot wrong as he handled everything that came his way with poise and assurance. In his stroke-mak-ing, in the placement of the shots, indeed in his whole demeanour, Halligan was reminiscent of a Turner in his prime. McCormick played with commendable restraint in supporting Halligan, and his broad bat must have seemed equally unbeatable to the toiling Park bowlers, of whom Craig Thiele remained the most likely to capture a wicket. McCormick’s 62 not out was fashioned from 154 balls.

In Park’s second innings, there was a whirlwind knock from Tony Collins, whose 64 came from 42 balls, and James Shipley continued his authoritative run of form with a sweet 68 not out from 92 balls. FIRST BLOOD

Woolston W.M.C. at last had something tangible to celebrate on Saturday evening. It recorded its first senior outright victory, and over the defending champion, Marist, at Ham.

Not for the first time, Woolston was involved in a nail-biting finish, but in sharp contrast to earlier decisions this summer, the rub of the green went its way and victory was achieved in spectacular manner.

Having failed by just three runs to gain first-innings points in the morning, Woolston was set 186 to win in 85 minutes and 20 overs, a most sporting declaration by the Marist captain, Justin Boyle.

Woolston made a solid start, but Anup Nathu and Gary Gardner departed on consecutive balls. Murray Hartland’s good recent form continued, however, and he chose an excellent time to make his first half-century of the season.

He had a slice of luck, being dropped in the deep midway through his innings, but got his runs from only 87 balls. Peter Sullivan and Ajit Johnpillai made important middle-order contributions, and when the last 20 overs began. Woolston needed 104 with i just two wickets down.'
