I.M.F. head The International Monetary Fund executive board has ended months of sometimes divisive debate by electing the governor of the French Central Bank, Michel Camdessus, as its new managing director. The election is normally routine but this time a stalemate developed between Mr Camdessus and the Dutch Finance Minister, Onno Ruding, chairman of the I.M.F.’s policymaking Interim Committee. — Washington. Cold kills A cold wave sweeping northern and eastern India has killed at least 40 people in the last week, Indian newspapers reported. The “Times of India” said 24 people died
from exposure in Bihar State and another 16 died of the cold or were crushed to death when avalanches' destroyed more than 600 houses in Jammu and Kashmir. — New Delhi. Banker ransomed The vice-president of Brazil’s Bradesco bank has been released by kidnappers after payment of a SUS 4 million ($7.8 million) ransom. The police said Antonio Beltrao Martinez was freed in Sao Paulo after more than a month in captivity. — Sao Paulo. Hostages freed Two South Korean engineers kidnapped by Philippines communist rebels almost two months ago have been set free. Park Jong Soo, aged 45, and Chung Sang Ki, aged 32, were released in a remote town in Cagayan province. — Manila. Dangerous security A high-ranking World Bank official who was a passenger on a Swissair plane was accidentally shot in the knee after a security officer’s pistol fired while he was unloading it in a toilet, an airline spokesman said. — Zurich.
