Karachi toll rises

NZPA-Reuter Karachi

Four more people were killed overnight in clashes between Pashtuns and Mohajirs, raising to 179 the death toll since rioting broke out in Karachi five days ago.

Doctors said three bodies with multiple stab wounds and 14 injured people were brought to hospitals, and a young man died from other injuries.

City officials said 131 people had been killed but unofficial figures, confirmed by Governmentowned and private hospitals, put the death toll at 179. The riots flared on Monday when Pashtuns from North-west Frontier Province and Afghanistan attacked Mohajirs, Muslims who came from India when the subcontinent was partitioned by Britain in 1947.
