Medical research grants
Seven Christchurch doctors have been awarded grants by the Medical Research Council.
They are: Dr S. J. Chetwynd, $24,880 for one year; Associate Professor R. Fraser, $27,762 for one year; Dr P. M. George, $191,220 over three years; Associate Professor A. R. Hornblow, $4OOO over four months; Dr M. G. Metcalf, $146,251 over two years; and Drs N. R. Pattinson and B. A. Chapman, $88,386 over three years. This year the Medical Research Council announced research grants worth more than $4 million over the next threp years.
Dr Jim Hodge, the director of the council, said applications for more than $8 million had been
received and some worthy projects could not be funded. “However, in spite of the fact that only half the total requested has been funded, the council has been able to initiate a number of research programmes in areas of national priority, including child health, mental disorders, hepatitis B and asthma.” The Medical Research Council administers Government money provided for medical research. It also acts as the national co-ordinating body for
medical research. Dr Chetwynd (Christchurch School of Medicine) will study private medical insurance in New Zealand; Professor Fraser (School of Medicine), alcoholic cirrhosis and the Ito cell; Dr George (Christchurch Hospital), antitrypsin and antithrom-bin-111 variation and disease; Professor Hornblow (School of Medicine), Christchurch psychiatric epidemiology study; Dr Metcalf (Princess Margaret Hospital), premenstrual syndrome; Drs Pattinson and Chapman (School of Medicine), cholesterol solubilisation by human bile.
