GM to lay off more

NZPA-AP Detroit The General Motors Corporation, suffering from slow sales, and bulging inventories, will lay off 24,300 workers and teipporarily close seven plants in six states in January, the company says.

The temporary plant closing and lay-offs are in addition to previously announced indefinite layoffs of 5100 workers and cuts in the production rates at four plants, said a GM spokesman, John Mueller.

Workers on temporary' lay-off know they soon will return to work at the same plant. Workers on indefinite lay-off have the right to a job if one opens but have no idea when or where they will return to work.
