Rotorua bore users ‘upset’

PA Rotorua Rotorua bore users are “very upset” at Government moves aimed at cutting their geothermal resource. They. were warned not to panic by the chairman of the Rotorua Geothermal Users Association, Mr Roger Brewster, who labelled decisions by the Government on Wednesday “harsh and dra-. conian.” He was speaking after a meeting between bore users, interested groups, and Ministry of Energy officials. The Government has released figures which show that users wishing to continue with bores will have to pay heavily for the privilege. A licensing regime has been set up for those who wish to continue and a loans scheme for beneficiaries and pensioners inside the I.skm crisis area around Pohutu Geyser. “We will work through this and discuss with our members what is to be done,” said Mr Brewster. Court action, promoted early in the controversy by the association, appeared likely, he said.

Mr Brewster has taken issue with Ministry figures saying that users will face costs of $1733 in royalties for each bore. “That’s based on 30 users to a bore. There are some bores that won’t be able to support anything like 30 users so those peQle will have to pay faNmore.”
