Climber rescued after fall
Timaru reporter
A Dunedin climber was flown from near Mount Huxley yesterday morning after falling while climbing between the Huxley River and Temple Stream. The Twizel police said that Mr Ross Smith, aged 29, suffered injuries to his arms and legs in the fall.
The accident occurred at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday. One of Mr Smith’s companions stayed overnight
with him while the other two members of the climbing party went to raise the alarm.
Strong north-westerly winds made the rescue attempt difficult but at 10.30 a.m. Mr Smith and his companion were lifted out by helicopter.
Mr Smith was taken to Twizel and then to Oamaru Hospital. The hospital would not comment on his condition last evening.
