Cashmere buck record
PA Wellington A record price of $62,000 was paid in Nelson for a three-year-old cashmere buck, Silkwood Caesar, said the auc-
tioneers, Wrightson Dalgety. The buck, bought by a South Auckland businessman and farmer, Mr Kevin Plummer, the
owner of Newfibre Farms, Ltd, will go into an artificial insemination centre near Auckland. The sale was the highlight of the first production sale of Silkwood Cashmeres, of Richmond, Nelson.
More than 200 buyers from Invercargill to Whangarei attended the sale, held in the purposebuilt selling ring at the Silkwood property owned by Brian and Jane Ensor. Thirty-eight two-tooth bucks sired by Silkwood Caesar were auctioned, averaging $3384 with a top price of $BOOO, Wrightson Dalgety said.
Two-tooth bred-on does averaged $535, with a top of $620, and kid does averaged $520. Mixed-age does fetched between $370 and $6OO, with an average of $450.
Silkwood Caesar was bred in Australia by Wycroft Cashmeres, of Masterton, which earlier this month sold a buck for $38,000, then considered an Australasian and world record price.
