Animals to appear at children’s service

Donkeys and other animals will again appear at the annual children’s Christmas service in Christchurch Cathedral on Tuesday afternoon.

Animals lent from the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve have become a popular highlight of the service, which has been held regularly for many years. Staff of the Cathedral will play the parts of Joseph and Mary.

Most of the animals were usually well behaved, but a bull that took part last year “would not be invited back, because

he put his foot through the horse box,” said the Dean of Christchurch, the Very Rev. Dr David Coles. Any “mess” left by the animals would be cleaned up by the verger, Dr Coles said.

The Arts Centre Boys’ Choir would also sing at the 45-minute service, which will begin at 3 p.m.

The service would be a good opportunity for all children and their parents to sing carols "and pause in the midst of last-minute Christmas shopping to see and hear the traditional Christmas story again,” Dean Coles said.
