Metal trades award settled at 7 p.c.
By

in Wellington The metal trades award was finally settled yesterday at 7 per cent on wages and allowances over 10 months. The document expired on October 9, but the settlement was backdated only to December 1.
This means the effective wage increase is about 5.8 per cent, but tradesmen will get 7.5
through improved tool money payments. Also, an allowance of 26c an hour was introduced for those workers using electronic systems. Conciliation began on September 15, at the head of the wage round, but the talks were broken off on October 20 so that the Engineers’ Union might pursue an industrial campaign. Since then there have been several house deals
with individual companies — usually for either 7.5 per cent or on the “6 and 3” formula. This meant that the union was able yesterday to accept a 7 per cent pass-on memorandum knowing this would have little practical effect. Nearly 30 per cent of workers covered by the award are on paid rates and, according to the union, will invariably get 7.5 per cent.
