Pool-fencing bill moves
PA Wellington A bill providing for the compulsory fencing of private swimming pools should be reported back early in the New Year, Parliament has been told. Tabling an interim report on the Fencing of Swimming Pools Bill, the chairman of the Social Services Select Commit-
tee, Mrs Annette King (Lab., Horowhenua), said the committee wanted the public to know good progress was being made on the bill. Mrs King said evidence to the select committee emphasised that drowning was the second most frequent cause of accidental death among ' pre-school children, after road acci-
dents. A high proportion of those accidents occurred in domestic pools. The bill’s sponsor, Mr J. J. Terris (Lab., Western Hutt), said that with the holiday season approaching, parents and others with children in their care should fence their pools now.
