Vietnam leaders resign

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo The resignation of three top leaders of the Vietnamese Communist Party has been officially announced in Hanoi, Japanese newspapers reported yesterday. The papers report that the President, Truong Chinh, aged 79; Prime Minister Pham Van Dong, aged 80, and a key Politburo member, Le Due Tho, aged 75, quit at the Communist Party congress. Vietnam-watchers in Tokyo said the resignations marked one of the most significant changes in the party’s history.

“This has been expected, but the question now is who will replace Truong Chinh,” said one analyst. Japan’s Kyodo News Service and the daily “Asahi Shimbun” reported from Hanoi that signs point strongly to a Politburo member, Nguyen Van Linh, who has pioneered pragmatic economic reforms. “Linh is a clear leader of the reform faction, and if he become’s chief then the reform group can be seen as fairly in control,” said the analyst.
