Town Hall tourist numbers increase

Christchurch Town Hall lunch tour party numbers during November were double the November total last year, according to the Town Hall manager, Mr Ray Sleeman.

Mr Sleeman put the increase in tourist numbers down to improved promotion with the tour companies and better-quality services and products. “It is also pleasing to see the increase in the use of the auditorium, James Hay Theatre, and Cambridge and Conference rooms, for the eight months to November 30 this year,” Mr Sleeman told the Board of Management yesterday. “The Christmas booking numbers are well up on last year too.” The Board of Management has called for a report into the options for a Christchurch arts festival in 1989. Its chairman, Sir Hamish Hay, said that the festival was likely to specialise in a particular art form, such as musical groups, rather than support the general range of arts.
