Samasaan to miss Wellington Cup
By
J. J. BOYLE
The Riccarton stayer Samasaan will miss a start in the Wellington Cup, a race he won last January.
The work he missed after injuring a leg in his yard about 10 days ago could not have come at a worse time on the buildup planned for Riccarton’s top stayer, and his trainer Garth Jackson has decided against risking a "crash" programme aimed to fit him for the Fosters-sponsored $250,000 Cup on January 24. All going well Jackson would have had the Manawatu Cup as a valuable lead-up race for Samasaan. Instead the chestnut will be kept to beach work for a week or two yet, then will be given a rest before being
brought back, perhaps for racing at Easter. “It will be time enough then to plan where to go from there,” Jackson said yesterday. Jackson said the Brisbane Cup might be considered as an alternative to a winter spell in New Zealand then a preparation for another spring campaign in Melbourne. “The recent setback has been unfortunate, but
over all we have been lucky in the way of injuries with him,” Jackson said yesterday. “He came back from Trentham and Sydney unscathed last season, so I suppose we can’t grizzle when the luck changes. It’s just unfortunate that the injury to his leg this time means he has missed too much work when there was so little time left before the cup at Trentham."
