Purau ready for sea trials in Japan
Lyttelton's harbourmaster. Captain Jack Barbour, and chief engineer, Mr John Bushell, flew to Japan yesterday to complete engine and sea trials on the Purau. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s tug Purau was damaged in August during a delivery voyage from Nagasaki. The tug ran aground on a coral reef near New Caledonia, damaging the hull and propulsion units.
The Purau was then towed back to the builder’s shipyard in Japan for repairs. Those repairs have been completed, and when Captain Barbour and Mr Bushel! complete the trials the tug will begin the journey to New Zealand again. If all goes well, the Purau will be in Lyttelton on January 20. Captain Barbour and Mr Bushell hope to be back by Christmas Eve. ARRIVALS
