Aust, markets at records again

NZPA-AAP Sydney Strong demand for gold stocks and widespread support for industrial issues sent Australian share markets to record levels in active trading.

The Federal Government decision to maintain the gold industry’s tax exempt status spurred demand for key gold stocks, • while a stronger dollar encouraged support for blue chip industrials on hopes that domestic interest rates will fall.

Among the gold miners, Central Norseman leapt 80c to 1500. Metana added 50c to 710 while Whim Creek rose 40c to 490. Heavyweight miners were also in demand with Renison 30c higher at 980, Western Mining jumped another 18c to 536 with Bougainville up 7c at 315. BHP fell 2 to 876 as hopes for a production quota agreement from the latest OPEC meeting dimmed, while Santos, Australia’s largest onshore oil producer, fell 13 to 405.

Media stocks attracted attention on the industrial boards with Herald and Weekly Times up 10c at 1230, Queensland Press 60c higher at 1680, Advertiser up 5c at

345 and News 10 lower at 1660. Elsewhere, insurer FAI retraced Tuesday’s lost ground with a 30c gain to 830, QBE added 10c to 828, Adsteam rose 20c to 1460 and Lend Lease advanced 10c to 1010. The banks were also firmer with Westpac up 10c at 524.
